Ego Death of the ICU Nurse

The ego is innate and universal to all humans. An individual’s ego differentiates self from others by way of the reality principle - capacity to distinguish what is occurring in the mind from what is occurring in the external world.

Ego functioning includes judgment, sense of reality, impulse control, interpersonal functioning, cognitive processes, defensive functioning, stimulus barriers, mastery competence, the ability to provide and self-soothe. All things meant to keep you safe - inside this safety lives conditioned mind patterns and limiting beliefs.

When triggered, limiting beliefs such as “I’m not a real nurse if I leave the ICU.”

arises and the nervous system responses that once kept you safe emerge.

Do these beliefs still serve you?
